Cody Joseph Swanson is a figurative sculptor who resides in Florence, Italy and works primarily in clay, which is then reproduced in plaster, bronze or marble. He has recently completed over 16 pieces for the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls, SD. These additions to the Cathedral were produced in collaboration with the acclaimed architect Duncan Stroik under the patronage and guidance of Bishop Paul J. Swain. In conjunction with the work created for St Joseph Cathedral the Cardinal of Florence, His Eminence Giuseppe Betori, bestowed upon Cody the tremendous honor to produce a 4 meter sculpture depicting St. Emygdius for the Duomo of Foligno and was unveiled on January 24th 2012. This marked the first time in which a work of Cody Swanson has been placed alongside the famed Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who also produced two marble portraits for the same Cathedral.
Cody holds an M.A. in Liturgy, Sacred Art and Architecture from the European University in Rome, and has spent five consecutive years teaching sculpture with the renowned Florence Academy of Art, where he also studied sculpture. During his time with the Florence Academy, Cody received various awards for his work including best in show with the annual ARC Salon competition. His numerous bronzes are featured in public and private spaces throughout the world including the Opus Dei oratories of Ljubljana Slovenia and Florence Italy, the famed Palazzo Arcivescovile of Florence Italy, and the Springville Museum of Art, Springville Utah. As a Catholic father, husband, sculptor and teacher, Cody hopes the fruit of his labor will give glory to God and reflect His truth into the hearts of many.
